Square number plates for 4x4s: size, layout and fit guide
Measure a square plate recess, check a one- or two-line registration layout and review the complete specification before ordering.

Start with the mounting recess
Square plates are commonly considered when a vehicle has a taller, narrower mounting recess. Measure the usable width and height rather than the outside of the bumper or tailgate. Note any holder, trim, camera, handle, light or fixing holes around the recess.
Measure the front and rear separately if you are ordering a pair. The two mounting areas may use different shapes, and an existing plate can hide screw holes or marks that will become visible when its size changes.
Check the registration as well as the space
A recess that looks square does not by itself decide whether a particular registration fits the chosen specification. Enter the complete registration in the Vista builder and review the preview before selecting your lettering or fixings.
Keep every letter and number exactly as shown on your entitlement document. A different plate shape does not allow characters to be squeezed together, rearranged or altered to form a word. The required character size, spacing and margins still apply to a road-use plate.
Understand one- and two-line layouts
Current DVSA MOT guidance says registration plates may use single- or two-line formats. The correct arrangement still depends on the registration, the vehicle and the applicable dimensional requirements, so use DVLA leaflet INF104 rather than treating every two-line design as interchangeable.
In a square preview, check the line break and the separation between character groups. If the layout looks unexpected, recheck the registration and selected size before continuing. Contact Vista before ordering if you are unsure whether the format suits your vehicle.
Choose the options available for the square size
Vista's car builder includes a 4x4 Square option for front and rear selections. Choose the plate position first, then review the lettering styles, border and fixings shown for that size. Badges are not offered on the 4x4 Square option.
Select Road Legal when the finished plates are intended for public-road use. Choose Show Plates only for display use. The preview is an ordering aid; Vista checks the final road-use specification before manufacture.
Review the finished fit before checkout
Hold the measurements against the vehicle and check that the plate can sit securely without covering the registration, lights or other vehicle features. DVSA guidance says plates should be fitted vertically, or as close to vertical as reasonably practicable.
For modern road-use plates, also check the correct white front or yellow rear background, black characters, supplier details and applicable British Standard marking. Official guidance checked on 10 October 2026; use the linked GOV.UK and DVSA pages for current requirements.
