Imported vehicle number plates: compact sizing and fit checks
Understand the limited imported-vehicle exception for smaller plates, what to measure and what still needs checking for UK road use.

The smaller-plate exception is limited
The current DVSA MOT manual says imported vehicles that do not have space for standard-sized registration plates can have smaller registration plates. The point is the vehicle's available mounting space, not simply a preference for a compact look.
An imported badge, unusual bumper or small-looking recess does not settle the question by itself. Check the vehicle's original construction and the usable factory mounting area before deciding that the exception applies.
Plate size and character layout are separate checks
The outside dimensions of a plate and the size, stroke and spacing of its characters are related but separate checks. A short registration may fit a shorter backing plate while retaining the applicable character specification; a long registration needs more width.
Do not compress the registration, close the group space or reduce the lettering simply to fit a preferred plate outline. GOV.UK directs drivers to DVLA leaflet INF104 for the prescribed character dimensions, spacing and margins, while the MOT manual treats a plate that does not conform to the specified requirements as a major defect.
Measure the factory recess carefully
Measure the flat usable width and height of the actual recess in millimetres. Note curved edges, raised trim, screw holes, brackets, cameras, sensors, lamps and air intakes. Check whether a removable holder is making the space look smaller than the bumper itself.
Measure the front and rear separately because an imported vehicle can have different mounting areas at each end. Take a straight-on photograph with a tape measure in view if you need the supplier to assess the fit.
The rest of the road-use specification still applies
A compact imported-vehicle plate still needs to show the registration correctly and remain clear, secure and unobstructed. For vehicles manufactured after 1 January 1973, INF104 specifies reflective material, black characters, a white front background and a yellow rear background.
The applicable font, spacing, supplier identification and British Standard marking still matter. Fixings must not alter or hide a character, and the finished plate should sit vertically, or as close to vertical as is reasonably practicable.
Check fit before ordering from Vista
Enter the complete registration first, then compare the size options shown in the Vista builder. Short oblong and shaped choices have different limits and option availability; selecting a smaller size is not, by itself, confirmation that the imported-vehicle exception applies.
Choose Road Legal only when the final specification is intended and suitable for public-road use. If a standard plate will not fit the vehicle's original recess, contact Vista before checkout with the measured width and height and a clear straight-on photograph. Official guidance checked on 23 October 2026.
- Measure the usable recess in millimetres.
- Check the front and rear mounting areas separately.
- Do not reduce or re-space lettering just to force a fit.
- Keep cameras, lamps, sensors and air intakes clear.
- Ask for a fit check before ordering an uncertain road-use size.
