Road use

Are 3D and 4D number plates legal in the UK?

Raised lettering can be permitted, but the complete plate must comply. Learn what to check when ordering plates for road use.

Example of Vista Plates lettering

Raised lettering can be permitted

GOV.UK allows raised characters. A product described as 3D or 4D is not automatically compliant: the complete plate must meet the applicable requirements.

For modern plates, check the reflective background, black characters, white front and yellow rear colours, supplier identification and applicable British Standard marking. Plates fitted after 1 September 2021 use BS AU 145e; their characters must be a single shade of black, non-reflective and not removable.

Spacing and layout still matter

The registration must use the prescribed character sizes and spacing. Moving characters together to make a word does not become acceptable because the lettering is raised. Check the official DVLA guidance for your registration and vehicle.

Order for the intended use

Choose Road Legal in the Vista builder for a road-use order. Show Plates are for display use and must not be fitted for public-road use. If you have a question about your specification, ask us before paying.

Compare finishes through our product pages, then review the size, registration and plate selection in the builder. We need evidence of identity and entitlement before manufacturing road-use plates.
