Hex number plates: size, registration length and fit

Compare Vista's 20, 18, 16 and 14-inch hex plate options, check your registration length and measure the mounting area before ordering.

Start with the registration, not the shape

A hex plate has angled ends that create a more shaped outline than a standard oblong. The registration still decides how much usable width the plate needs, so enter the complete registration before choosing a size.

Vista's builder offers 20, 18, 16 and 14-inch hex options for car plates. The current character limits are seven characters for 20 inches, six for 18 inches, five for 16 inches and four for 14 inches. Spaces are ignored for this builder length check, but the road-use layout still needs its prescribed group spacing.

Choose the largest suitable option first

Do not select the smallest hex simply because it has the sharpest appearance. Start with the largest option that suits the vehicle, then confirm that the registration fits comfortably in the builder preview.

A short registration can open more size choices, but it does not allow the characters, group space or margins to be reduced. GOV.UK directs drivers to DVLA leaflet INF104 for the required character height, width, stroke, spacing and margins.

Measure the vehicle mounting area

Measure the flat usable width and height of the bumper or tailgate, including any recess or existing holder. Note cameras, sensors, lights, trim, tow bars and old screw holes. Check the front and rear separately if you are ordering a pair.

Use the full outside dimensions of the selected plate, including its angled ends. Hold a paper template or measurements against the vehicle before ordering, without covering lights or sensors. A shaped plate should sit securely and vertically, or as close to vertical as reasonably practicable.

Review the options for a hex plate

Badges are not offered on Vista's hex sizes. Choose the plate size first, then review the lettering, border and fixing options shown in the builder. Check both previews when the front and rear use different sizes.

Raised lettering projects from the plate face, so check clearance if a holder or trim overlaps the mounting area. Compare 2D, 3D gel and 4D product photographs rather than judging the finish from the front-facing preview alone.

Check the complete road-use specification

A hex outline does not replace the rules for the complete plate. For road use, the characters still need the correct size, stroke width, spacing, prescribed font and registration format. The plate also needs the correct reflective background, colours, supplier details and applicable British Standard marking.

Choose Road Legal when the finished plate will be used on public roads, then check the registration, position, size, lettering, border and fixings before checkout. Choose Show Plates only for display use. Official guidance checked on 17 October 2026; the current DVSA MOT manual was updated on 14 October 2026.
