Motorcycle number plates: size, layout and ordering guide
What to check before ordering a motorcycle number plate, including the two-line layout, rear display rules and Vista bike sizes.

Motorcycle plates use a different layout
A motorcycle plate is not simply a smaller version of a car plate. GOV.UK says motorcycle and motor tricycle registration numbers should be displayed on two lines, so check the line break as well as every letter and digit before ordering.
Motorcycles and motor tricycles registered on or after 1 September 2001 must display a number plate at the rear only. A machine registered before that date may also carry a front plate, but it does not have to.
Choose road use or display use first
In the Vista bike builder, select Road Legal when the plate is intended for use on public roads. This uses the standard 9×7 option. Our smaller 8×6, 7×5, 6×4 and 9×3 sizes are offered as Show Plates for display use.
A smaller mounting area or a preference for a compact appearance does not by itself make a reduced plate suitable for road use. Check the official requirements and choose the mode that matches how the plate will be used.
What the complete road-use plate needs
Current GOV.UK guidance says vehicle plates must use reflective material, have black characters on the correct background colour, carry supplier identification and show the applicable British Standard. For plates fitted after 1 September 2021, that standard is BS AU 145e, and the characters must be a single shade of black, non-reflective and not removable.
The character size, style and spacing also matter. Use the official rules and DVLA leaflet INF104 as the reference for a road-use specification rather than judging legality from the overall dimensions alone.
Lettering, borders and badges in the Vista builder
The standard 9×7 option offers the lettering styles shown in the bike builder and an optional border. The smaller display sizes use 2D Standard lettering without a border. Vista does not offer badges on motorcycle plates.
Review the live preview after choosing the size and lettering. If the registration looks unexpected, return to the text field and check the exact characters rather than relying on memory or a photograph taken at an angle.
Measure the mounting area before checkout
Measure the usable width and height of the rear mounting area, noting any holder, bracket, light or existing fixing holes. Make sure the plate can sit securely and remain clearly visible without being forced around an unsuitable curve.
Before checkout, confirm the registration, selected size, use mode, lettering, border and fixings. For a road-use order, be ready to provide acceptable evidence of identity and entitlement to the registration.
- Check that the registration is arranged over two lines.
- Use 9×7 and Road Legal for a Vista road-use bike order.
- Treat the smaller Vista sizes as display options.
- Measure the bracket and check the fixing position before ordering.
