What the green flash means

A green flash is an optional identifier for a qualifying zero-emission vehicle. It appears as a vertical green strip on the left-hand side of the plate; it does not replace any part of the registration.

Do not assume that every vehicle described as electric can display one. The official scheme is based on zero carbon dioxide emissions at the tailpipe, so the vehicle must meet that definition before a green flash is added.

Check the vehicle, not just its fuel label

Battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles with zero tailpipe emissions can qualify. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles still have tailpipe emissions and are not eligible for the green flash under the official scheme.

The green flash can be used on a new or existing qualifying vehicle. It is optional, so an eligible vehicle does not have to display one. Adding the physical plates does not change the vehicle record or assign a registration; check the vehicle and registration documents separately.

Choose the plate size before the badge

Vista offers EV Badge and EV UK Badge choices on Standard Oblong and Range Rover rear plates. Select the front, rear or pair and the plate size first, then compare the available badge previews. EV badges are not offered on Vista short, square or motorcycle plate sizes.

For a pair, check the complete white front and yellow rear previews. Make sure the registration, plate size, lettering, badge, border and fixings are correct before checkout. Contact Vista before ordering if the preview does not match what you expect.

Keep the complete road-use specification compliant

A green flash is only one element of a number plate. A modern road-use plate must still use the prescribed registration layout, reflective background and black characters, with white at the front and yellow at the rear. It must also carry the required supplier details and applicable British Standard marking.

Choose Road Legal when the plates will be used on public roads. GOV.UK says number plates fitted after 1 September 2021 must meet BS AU 145e. A registered supplier will also need original evidence of identity and entitlement before making up road-use plates.

Check local benefits separately

A green flash makes qualifying vehicles easier to identify, but it does not by itself guarantee free parking, exemption from a charge or access to a local scheme. Those rules are set separately, so check the relevant council, operator or authority before travelling.

Official guidance checked on 11 October 2026. Recheck the linked GOV.UK pages when ordering because number plate and vehicle scheme rules can change.

  • Confirm that the vehicle has zero tailpipe emissions.
  • Choose an eligible plate size before selecting the EV badge.
  • Review both plate previews when ordering a pair.
  • Use Road Legal for plates intended for public-road use.
  • Check local parking and road-charge schemes separately.
