Range Rover rear number plates: measuring, sizing and ordering checks

Measure the rear recess, compare it with the front mounting area and choose Vista's Range Rover rear fitment without assuming every model uses the same plate.

Treat the vehicle as the reference

Range Rover models, generations, trims and replacement tailgates can use different recesses, plinths and fixing positions. Measure the vehicle in front of you rather than ordering from the model name alone.

Record the flat usable width and height of the rear recess in millimetres. Note its corner shape, camera, tailgate handle, lamps, trim, existing holes and any holder. Measure inside a holder or plinth if it will remain on the vehicle.

  • Measure the actual rear recess.
  • Record width and height in millimetres.
  • Check cameras, handles, trim and lamps.
  • Photograph the recess straight on.
  • Note existing holes and fixing points.

Measure the front and rear separately

Vista's Range Rover option is a rear-plate fitment. The front bumper may use a different size or shape, so check its mounting area separately when ordering a pair.

In the builder, choose Front & Rear, then select the appropriate front size and Range Rover for the rear where that matches your measurements. Review both previews rather than assuming the pair must have identical outer dimensions.

  • Check the front bumper independently.
  • Choose a size for each end of a pair.
  • Review the white front and yellow rear previews.
  • Do not copy rear measurements to the front automatically.

The fitment name does not replace the road-use rules

Range Rover rear is an ordering and fitment description, not a separate legal class of number plate. A plate used on the road still needs the prescribed registration layout, character style, spacing and margins for the vehicle and plate specification.

Current GOV.UK guidance says modern plates use reflective material, black characters, a white front or yellow rear background, no background pattern, supplier identification and the applicable British Standard marking. Choosing a wider rear fitment does not allow the characters to be stretched, rearranged or respaced.

  • Copy the registration from the entitlement document.
  • Keep the prescribed character groups.
  • Choose Road Legal for public-road use.
  • Check the complete specification, not only the outer shape.

Check styles, badges and fixings after the size

Choose the plate position and size before selecting the lettering finish or extras. Vista's builder offers badges on the Range Rover rear option, but availability of other extras depends on the selected specification, so use the live preview and order summary as the reference.

A holder designed for a standard oblong plate is not automatically suitable for a wider rear fitment. Compare any existing frame with the selected plate and choose a fixing method that suits the tailgate or plinth without covering the registration or lower markings.

  • Select the rear size before adding extras.
  • Check badge placement in the preview.
  • Do not assume a standard holder will fit.
  • Keep screws, clips and frame edges clear of the registration.

Complete the final fit check

Before fitting, hold the plate or an accurate template against the intended mounting area. Confirm that it sits flat, upright and secure without fouling the camera, handle, lamps, trim or moving tailgate parts.

The current DVSA MOT manual says registration plates must not be obscured and a missing plate, or one insecure enough to be likely to fall off, is a major defect. After fitting, read the full registration from directly behind and both rear corners, then check again after the first journeys and washes. If the measurements or recess shape remain uncertain, send Vista clear photographs and dimensions before ordering. Official guidance checked on 4 November 2026.

  • Test the fit before drilling or bonding.
  • Keep the plate upright and unobstructed.
  • Check tailgate and camera clearance.
  • Read every character after fitting.
  • Reinspect the fixings after early journeys.
