Number plate flags and UK stickers: what to check before driving abroad

Choosing a flag badge? Learn when a separate UK sticker is needed abroad and what to check before ordering your plates.

Choose a badge with your journey in mind

A flag badge is a small detail, but it is worth checking before a trip abroad. Start by looking at your existing plates: do they have a flag, which identifying letters appear underneath, and are the front and rear specifications the same?

If you are ordering a replacement, decide whether you want to match the other plate or choose a matching pair. Keep a clear photograph of the existing badge handy if you need help identifying it.

Which flags can appear on a UK number plate?

GOV.UK permits the Union flag, St George’s cross, the Scottish Saltire and the Welsh red dragon with approved identifying letters. The flag sits above the identifier on the left; neither may exceed 50mm in width or occupy the plate margin. Check the official list before choosing a combination.

When do you need a separate UK sticker?

For travel outside the UK, GOV.UK says a plate showing UK with the Union flag generally removes the need for a separate UK sticker. Plates with no identifier, GB, an EU flag or an England, Scotland or Wales flag require a UK sticker, subject to the destination exceptions below.

Spain, Cyprus and Malta require the sticker regardless of the plate badge. The Republic of Ireland does not require one. Where needed, fit the white oval UK sticker to the rear of the vehicle, not to the number plate. Remove or cover an old GB sticker before travelling outside the UK.

Check the options for your chosen plate size

In the Vista builder, choose your plate set and size before selecting a badge. Badge options are available for Standard Oblong and Range Rover plates; our short plates and motorcycle plates do not offer badges. For a pair, check which size is selected at each end and review both previews.

If you are comparing UK Badge and UK Badge V2, inspect the preview rather than relying on the option name alone. For travel, check the identifying letters and flag against the official guidance. Contact Vista before ordering if you are unsure what your chosen design displays.

A quick check before checkout or departure

For road-use orders, choose Road Legal and review the full specification. A flag badge is only one part of the plate, and choosing one does not settle every requirement for your vehicle or journey.

Official travel guidance checked on 6 October 2026. Recheck it before departure, particularly if your route includes several countries.

  • Look at the flag and identifying letters on your existing rear plate.
  • Check every destination on your route in the official guidance.
  • Review plate sizes and badge placement in both previews.
  • Check your registration, plate selection and delivery address before checkout.
