A border is optional

A number plate border is a decorative line around the inside edge of the plate. It does not replace the margin, change the registration layout or create extra room for lettering. Start with the correct plate size and registration, then decide whether a border suits the finished design.

The DVSA MOT manual permits an optional non-reflective border within the plate margin. The border must remain separate from the registration characters so it does not affect their appearance or legibility.

Check the measurements for the vehicle's age

For a vehicle first used before 1 September 2021, the current MOT manual says an optional border must be no wider than 6mm and must not come within 5mm of the characters.

For a vehicle first used on or after 1 September 2021, the border must be no wider than 5mm and must not come within 10mm of the characters. These dates relate to the vehicle and plate requirements, not simply the day you place the order.

Choose the colour after the plate size

The Vista car builder offers No Border, Black Border, Red Border, Green Border and Blue Border. Choose the front, rear or pair and the plate size first, then compare the border in the live preview. The white front and yellow rear backgrounds can make the same colour look different.

If you are ordering a pair, review both plate previews rather than checking only one. Make sure the border is continuous, sits inside the outer edge and leaves the complete registration easy to read.

Keep clear of characters and required markings

The registration remains the priority. A border, fixing, badge or holder must not touch a character or make it look like another letter or number. Pay particular attention to the ends of short registrations, where a decorative line may appear closer to the text.

A road-use plate still needs the correct reflective background, black characters, white front or yellow rear colour, supplier details and applicable British Standard marking. GOV.UK says plates fitted after 1 September 2021 use BS AU 145e. A border does not replace or cover any of those elements.

Complete the final preview check

Choose Road Legal when the finished plate is intended for public-road use. Confirm the registration, vehicle position, size, lettering, badge, border and fixings, then compare the preview with the registration document before checkout.

Choose Show Plates only for display use. Their use setting is separate from the border colour, so do not treat a border option as confirmation that the complete plate is suitable for the road.

Official guidance checked on 14 October 2026. Use the linked GOV.UK and DVSA sources for the latest requirements.
