Road-legal vs show number plates: which should you order?
Choose the right plate type for road use or display, understand the markings and spacing, and check your Vista builder selection before ordering.

Start with where the plate will be used
Choose the plate type from its intended use, not only its appearance. A plate fitted to a vehicle used on public roads must meet the applicable display rules. A show plate is a display product rather than a separate road-use category, so it must not be fitted for public-road use when it does not meet those requirements.
In the Vista builder, select Road Legal for a registration plate intended for a road vehicle. Select Show Plates for a sign, event display or other off-road decorative use. If the same design may later be fitted to a vehicle, order the road-use specification from the start.
- Choose by intended use before selecting a finish.
- Use Road Legal for a plate intended for a road vehicle.
- Keep Show Plates for display use.
- Do not treat a realistic-looking preview as proof of compliance.
Know what a modern road-use plate needs
Current GOV.UK guidance says a modern plate must use reflective material, black characters, a white front or yellow rear background and no background pattern. It must also show its supplier and the applicable British Standard; plates fitted after 1 September 2021 use BS AU 145e.
The characters must not be removable or reflective. On plates fitted after 1 September 2021 they must be a single shade of black. Raised 3D characters are permitted, but the finish name does not replace the requirements for the complete plate, including its layout, markings and materials.
- Check white for the front and yellow for the rear.
- Look for the supplier and British Standard markings.
- Keep the background plain and reflective.
- Review the whole specification, not only the lettering style.
Road-use spacing is not a styling option
Copy the registration exactly from the V5C or another entitlement document. GOV.UK says you must not rearrange the letters or numbers, or alter them so that they are difficult to read. A short registration, private number or raised finish does not create permission to change the prescribed layout.
For recognised UK formats, Vista's Road Legal builder setting arranges the standard group spacing automatically. The Show Plates setting keeps the spacing you type for display work. Check every character in the preview, but use the official rules and the finished specification—not custom spacing—as the road-use reference.
Documents are part of a road-use order
GOV.UK says a road-use number plate can only be made up by a registered supplier. The supplier needs original evidence of your name and address and evidence that you are entitled to use the registration, such as an accepted V5C, V750 or V778 document.
Prepare the correct documents before ordering and keep their reference numbers private. Show Plates do not turn an unassigned registration into one you can display on a vehicle, and buying a physical plate does not assign a private number through DVLA.
- Prepare accepted identity and entitlement evidence.
- Keep document images and reference numbers out of public messages.
- Match the registration to the entitlement document.
- Complete any DVLA assignment separately before fitting new plates.
Check the builder summary before checkout
After choosing Road Legal or Show Plates, review the front, rear or pair selection, registration, size, lettering, badge, border and fixings. For a road-use pair, inspect both the white front and yellow rear previews and make sure the selected size suits each mounting area.
Once a road-use plate is fitted, keep the complete registration clean, secure and easy to read. The current DVSA MOT manual lists an illegible inscription, an incorrect registration and a plate that does not meet the specified requirements as major defects. Official guidance checked on 29 October 2026.
- Read the registration character by character.
- Check the plate type shown in the order summary.
- Review both ends when ordering a pair.
- Measure the mounting area before changing plate size.
- Keep the finished registration clean, secure and unobscured.
