Choosing short number plates: size, fit and registration length
Check registration length, vehicle mounting space and available options before choosing 18, 16 or 14 inch short plates.

Start with your registration
A shorter plate can suit a registration with fewer characters, but the available room for the registration comes first. Do not select the smallest plate just because you like its appearance. Your characters still need to fit the chosen specification.
Vista offers 18, 16 and 14 inch short oblong options, alongside hex shapes. Enter your registration before comparing sizes so the builder can show the relevant character limit and options.
Measure the vehicle, not just the old plate
Check the mounting recess, holder and fixing positions. A shorter replacement can reveal old screw holes or leave part of a larger mounting area visible. Measure the front and rear separately; the two spaces may differ.
Think about how you will secure the replacement. If a holder is staying on the vehicle, measure its usable space and confirm it works with your chosen plate. Ask us before ordering if you are unsure.
Review the available extras
Badges are not available on Vista short plates. Choose the size first, then review the lettering, border and fixing options shown by the builder. Options on a standard plate are not necessarily available on a smaller one.
If you want a raised finish, compare the close-up photographs after choosing a compatible size. Check the total price with your final specification rather than relying on a price for another size or plate set.
Choose the right use mode
For road-use orders, select Road Legal and have the final specification checked before manufacture. Selecting a short size is not, by itself, confirmation that your registration fits a compliant layout.
For a display design, choose Show Plates. Review the preview and text carefully, and keep display plates for their intended use. If your registration is close to a size limit, contact Vista before checkout.
Your final checklist
Check both plate positions before ordering a pair. Confirm the registration, front and rear sizes, finish, fixings and delivery address.
- Measure the front and rear mounting spaces.
- Check whether existing screw holes will remain visible.
- Review the builder's character limit for each selected size.
- Ask us about fit before placing an uncertain order.
